The Portuguese Guitar, eternally linked to Fado, recognized as Cultural and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, is a stringed musical instrument whose origins date back to Medieval and Renaissance Scythons. This instrument went through a critical period of near extinction in the 19th century, but resurfaced with the affirmation of Fado as the Portuguese national song. The revival of Portuguese Guitar gained significant momentum when it was incorporated into the student environment in Coimbra.
Nowadays, the construction of the Portuguese Guitar is entrusted exclusively to highly specialized artisans. This instrument is considered an elite piece, appreciated by artists not only nationally but also internationally. Its intrinsic connection to Fado gives it a special status, being an essential component in the interpretation of this unique form of Portuguese musical expression. Its resilience throughout history, from its medieval roots to contemporary global recognition, attests to the cultural and artistic importance of the Portuguese Guitar.
